2012 All-New Porsche Carrera: The Burmester® Sound System (Part 12/12)

PORSCHE Europe: Official Press Release

The new Porsche 911 Carrera

New Top-Of-The-Range Burmester® High-End Sound-System Option

In addition to the predecessor model’s equipment options, Porsche is offering new customisation options for the new 911 Carrera. Porsche has teamed up with Burmester® to develop a special system for the 911 Carrera as the new top-of-the-range sound system offering.

The experience of the multiple prize-winning systems in the Panamera and Cayenne has been harnessed to achieve total output and sound quality unprecedented in the sports car segment. The performance data provide impressive testimony of this: twelve individually controllable loudspeakers, including an active so-called subwoofer built into the bodyshell with 140 millimetre (5.5 inch) speaker diameter and integrated 300 watt Class D output stage; complemented by 16 amplifier channels with a total output of more than 800 watts. A frequency range of 35 Hz to 20 kHz can be achieved in all seat positions, the maximum undistorted sustainable sound pressure level for music is in excess of 120 dB.

The Bose Surround Sound System continues to be offered as an option. It also features twelve loudspeakers including an 100 watt active subwoofer built into the bodyshell with Class D output stage and 200 millimetre (7.9 inch) speaker diameter as well as eight amplifier channels, ensuring an impressive aural experience. This delivers an overall output of 445 watts.

The highlight of the optional Bose and Burmester sound systems is the patented bodyshell subwoofer solution. This development supersedes the previously separate subwoofer boxes and uses the body structures of the body-in-white cowl frame. This solution saves four or five kilograms of system weight, reduces the required installation space while at the same time enhancing bass performance. The excellent, so-called driving point – the positioning of the subwoofer in relation to the vehicle geometry – also creates a very efficient system. Efficiency is increased by up to ten dB compared with previous solutions. Compared with earlier systems, this means twice the volume accompanied by a 90 per cent reduction in power consumption. As a result of the symmetrical configuration of the cowl frame relative to the direction of travel and associated sound emitting openings, the driver and front passenger experience a very even bass distribution within the vehicle cabin with only one loudspeaker chassis.

The 911 Carrera's seats and ambiance can be customised to one’s individual taste. There are basically two different seat shapes available for the new 911 Carrera models: Sports Seats and Sports Seats Plus. The seat shape of the comfortable, sportily-sculpted sports seats corresponds to the previous standard seats. The new Sports Seats Plus afford even more side support for a sportier driving style and feature a narrower cut. Both versions offer four-way electrical adjustment.

Over and above the standard seat functionality, the new optional sports seats with fully-electrical 14-way adjustment offer electrically-powered fore and aft adjustment, seat cushion angle, seat cushion height adjustment and four-way lumbar adjustment. The 18-way Adaptive Sports Seats Plus and prominent seat bolsters, also available as an option, feature additional adjustment of the seat cushion and seat back bolsters for optimal side support in any driving situation. Both versions include the Memory Package and electrical steering column adjustment. The Memory Package stores a wealth of seat, steering column and vehicle settings. In conjunction with optional heated seats, seat ventilation is now available for the first time for all four sports seat versions.

Leather interiors are offered in standard or special colours, in bi-colour or as natural leather. The available trims vary widely in style: from sporty carbon and brushed aluminium to classic wood.

Other optional extras for the new 911 Carrera include, for example
- Light Design Package for the passenger compartment
- Porsche Dynamic Light System (PDLS) with dynamic cornering lights and speed-dependent driving light control
- ParkAssist (front and rear)
- Porsche Entry & Drive without active key handling
